Woodcote Church

Introduction

Woodcote village is the largest in the Langtree Team, with a population of around 1,500 people. At the heart of this thriving village are Langtree Secondary and Woodcote Primary Schools with the library and community centre part of the same site.

At the spiritual heart of the village is the church of St Leonard. Once part of the parish of South Stoke, it became separate only in 1952.

Church History

There are records which suggest that there was a church here from as early as the sixth century, though today's building is a Victorian construction which used materials from an earlier, medieval, building.

Soapy Sam

The cost of the new building, erected in 1845, was £1,108 and and it was consecrated by 'Soapy Sam', the Rt Revd Dr Wilberforce, Bishop of Oxford on 22 April 1846.

Inside, it has homely simplicity with rich Victorian wall-tiling in the apse, and a simple gallery at the west end.

The Community

By agreement of the Bishop of Dorchester, the Methodist congregation of Woodcote hold a monthly service in the church and there are developing relationships between Anglicans and Methodists in the village.
